We are all making headway choosing curriculum for this academic year. However, I am struggling to find something I can use as a first aid curriculum/guidance. One of L’s electives is first aid but I’m coming up empty. Would anyone have any ideas?
Also C wants to do a second creative writing course as one of her electives. The three older children will already be following a creative writing course together, but she loves to write and would like to do a second one. She wants it very much to be a story writing course rather than a complete writing course. Would anyone have one they could recommend?
for first aid, the red cross has actual courses. Ones you have to go to, though.

Thank you for the suggestion. I checked up the UK Red Cross, but their courses are for 18 yr old and above. I did look at the resources they sell and think I may have found something that would work, so thank you very much.

Our local hospital offers first aid courses for a small fee. Is there nothing similar there? Also, I just googled “girl scout first aid training” and came up with a few printable resources – you might check that out 🙂

I’m pleased to see so many people recommend Cover Story/One Year Novel. It cost me almost $80 just to have it shipped to me!
I remember seeing a creative writing course that was something like “Write a novel in a year,” but it was for much older than my kids, so I didn’t look too closely at it.

For first aid I did a course with St John’s Ambulance but it was only one day. I don’t know what age you have to be to start volunteering with them but it might be worth investigating if that’s an option. Story writing – NaNoWriMo (national novel writing month) in November is always a good choice, although it’s only one month long, and I’ve recently heard about the One Year Adventure Novel course which looks interesting (just noticed that it was already recommended, but I thought I might as well chime in!).

I looked around here, but it looks rather slim-pickins. I am sure the Red Cross must have some good resources. Evan studies First Aid in Boys Scouts, but I am not sure it would be a complete course; maybe a good supplement. We are using Story Starters by Karen Andreola. You might take a look at Amazon.

For the Creative Writing course, I think you might find this a great help: “From Reader to Writer: Teaching Writing Through Classic Children’s Books” by Sarah Ellis. I bought copies from Amazon(they were library copies)for about $4. The book tells you about writers: what they read, their inspiration for their stories. Then gives some suggestions for writing assignments. Great book.

I’ve got a friend who came to our home ed group to take a first aid session. She might have an idea of who to contact locally. She is accredited to teach first aid in one of the London boroughs. I’m sure there is a generic website that you can use. Let me know if you want me to ask her.
