Angelicscalliwags Christmas Traditions # 6: Apple Sauce and Cinnamon Decorations

Donna asked if I would post the recipe for these, so here it, especially for you, Donna!  It is a recipe from the book ‘The Adventure of Christmas’.  We make these each year.

No-Bake Spiced Dough Ornaments

1 cup ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon ground cloves

1 tablespoon ground ginger

1 tablespoon ground nutmeg

1 cup apple sauce

2 tablespoons white craft glue

A few tablespoons of all purpose flour

Add together, mix until a dough.  Roll out, cut shapes.  Pop a hole at top (I used a straw).  Leave to dry for a few days.  Tie some ribbon and hang.

This year they were 7 and A5 was 1

Simple, yes?  Of course I find it impossible to stick to any kind of recipe or instructions.  Call it a character flaw, but I must tweak!  Me?  I call it creative.  So, over the years I’ve played around a bit.  I like cinnamon, pure and unadulterated.  No ginger for me!  Clove is a lovely addition.  I tend to add much more spice than the recipe says and omit the flour.  The resulting ornaments are darker in colour which I like (see one far left in picture).  I’ve also added glitter for a bit of seasonal festivities in the past.  My favourite, though, is simple apple sauce and cinnamon and glue.  Looks lovely, smells gorgeous and so good you could almost eat them (I don’t recommend it though!).  Enjoy your own tweaking and find out what you like the most.  Have fun!

  1. Oh, goodie. I was hoping you would post this recipe this week so we can try it next week. I’ll post pictures! Maybe;) Thank you for sharing, Claire. It is not often I get something posted just for me:)) HA.
I hope you have a most marvelous day. I have to go now. Suddenly, I have a taste for cinnamon bread with a side of applesauce.

      1. We made your ornaments and they were a big hit. The children had fun making them and they smelled soooo good. We gave many of them away as gifts and everyone just loved them. Some hung them in their car and said their car smells so good every time they get in it. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I think we shall be doing this every year.
Hope you got a chance to see them on the blog:)

  2. Thanks for sharing your recipe. I used to make cinnamon ornaments with my 3rd grade classes each year. I only used two ingredients – cinnamon and applesauce. I bet your recipe makes them smell delicious.

  3. So one year I made these and then left to go run some errand or other….. Meanwhile Jeff came home and saw some delicious smelling cookies on the counter. He ate part of one, spit it out, and when we came home warned me the cookies I’d made were horrible.
At which point I burst out laughing because he’d eaten our applesauce cinnamon ornaments.

  4. We made these a few times as well – just the cinnamon, sauce and glue recipe – I love how dark and fragrant they are, and so happy they last – fragrance and all! The girls love decorating them with glitter.
