When Teen Angst Hits….

….everyone needs a brother like T13.

Today has been a tricky day with emotions running high for my eldest twin.  This time of change from child to adult has been hard on all my older three children, although T seems to have come out the other end.  I am very grateful to have journeyed with at least one child through these choppy waters and to not just hope, but to know they are temporary.  The fact that he has been through it all himself means that T is very understanding of the girls’ tears, very patient and very kind.

Today, when L tearfully expressed how she was feeling, T went quietly away and wrote a song for her.  I could hear him strumming the same tune over and over but had no clue what he was doing.

He gave the song to L and she then showed it to me.  I was a bit teary and really proud of my boy, who is no longer a boy but a man.  It also brought to mind all the times L happily stood in for T and did his chores for him when he was struggling, taking him cups of tea and gently letting him know of her support for him.  The photo above is of him singing the song to her.

I am so blessed by these children of mine.

  1. That’s awesome! Good read.

  2. Oh…wow!

  3. There are no words that will do justice to the size of your children’s hearts! T indeed sounds like he is a young man… more mature than many that are age-wise men. God can surely be seen through you and your children. Thank you for sharing! Tell L to hang in there… my oldest is in a very similar phase… Thankfully today does not seem to be too bad.

    • We always say T is 13 going on 35! I hope he doesn’t go off the rails when he grows older because he feels he was too sensible in his youth 😉

  4. Love this post <3 We are on the cusp of these years and just wading in… it's these moments shared that make my heart remember what great people are forming and going to emerge just on the other side… So grateful you shared <3 Love this <3

  5. Precious. I read chapter 4 from What Is a Family? last night. It had your family written all over the pages. This post is a perfect example of that chapter. Thanks for suggesting it for me. I am going to get the girls their own copy for reading next year school year.
Please tell T that God will honor him for the way he is treating his sisters. Oh, that every brother loves their sisters like he does. Of course, the Bible teaches that we reap what we sow; L is certainly reaping a beautiful harvest from the seeds of kindness sown for her brother.

    • I’m so pleased you like it! I knew you would. I think I am going to follow your lead and buy one for my older girls also.

Well, that’s just too sweet for words. What wonderful children!

  11. I was in a funk one day and was rude to my siblings, but later felt really bad about it and wrote am apology song for them. Songs can convey a lot, so they’re great for soothing feelings. 🙂 I’d love to meet your kids. 🙂

  12. Awww, that is the sweetest thing ever. And great to read after a rough week with kiddos.
