In September Thomas will begin his first experience of mass education when he attends the local college for one day a week Engineering training.  This is a two year course and at the end he will gain a level 2 qualification in Engineering (equivalent to an IGCSE in Engineering).  It is a practical, hands-on course which I hope will suit him down to the ground 🙂

  • Teaching his little sisters

Each Friday I will hold have a conference with each older child, to check they are where they need to be and to plan their work load for the following week.  Each meeting will last 40 minutes.  During this time the two older children who are not with me will have some 1-2-1 time with their little sisters.  I have scheduled it so that each older child has 40 minutes with each little sister.  Thomas will spend this time with his little sisters (40 minutes 1-2-1) doing some sort of science with A7 and he will probably take B5 outside to play.

  • Extra Curricular Activities
  1. Thomas has helped out at Sunday school for the last couple of years, and he will be continuing this.
  2. He is a member of the village youth choir and also a member of an adult choir, where he is learning lots and lots of voice and music skills.
  3. He leads worship in his small groups and plays in the worship band at church (for the youth service) and occasionally leads the worship for Sunday school.  I know he wants to improve his guitar playing.  He is currently teaching himself classical guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar, and I think particularly wants to focus on being able to read music fluently.
  4. He enjoys weekly extreme Frisbee with the rest of the youth in our church, occasional tennis with one of his friends and adores mountain biking (especially if he can drag his father along 🙂  )
  5. He and the girls, along with a few of their friends, have created a band, and have big plans to play at the cabaret next summer.  Our shed at the bottom of the garden gives them a great place to practice out of the ear shot of the rest of the family 😉

Charlotte (age 13-14)

Bible study

  1. From a selection of these books for teens (she has already finished some of them): Capture5Capture6 Capture3 Capture2 Capture
  2. She will also join in with the family Bible study (Who am I?) and participate in our Israel Unit Study, Africa unit study and Bible videos twice a week

Victorian Unit Study

  1. Whilst Thomas and Lillie will only be required to read a selection of the £200 worth of books I bought written during the Victorian era, I will expect Charlotte to read all of them.  At least then I might get some peace about not having enough reading material.  She is currently reading five of them, along with War and Peace.  I may very well have met my match in the reading stakes.  So far she has enjoyed the biography of Jack the Ripper, Tess of the D’urbervilles and Cranford.
  2. Half of her English Language work will be based on her Victorian studies as she and her siblings complete their Victorian newspaper:susan watson 3

Charlotte will be taking her first IGCSE next summer in English Language. She will also be continuing with her singing, piano and music theory.  This year she will be studying for Grade 1 in piano, Grade 3 in musical theater and Grade 4 in singing.  In the next three years she will be working towards a Grade 5 in everything including music theory which gives her a Music IGCSE equivalent.

  • Maths
  1. Conquer maths
  • English Language (IGCSE)
  1. Susan Watson Writing (this will be used twice a week along side his Victorian studies)

  • Music
  1. She will continue weekly piano lessons and hopefully sit her Grade 1 next summer
  2. She will continue weekly singing lessons and will hopefully complete her Grade 3 musical theater in December and Grade 4 Singing in June
  • Writing
  1. She will be continuing with Here to Help Learning curriculum.  She is hoping to finish her book this year 🙂
  2. I’m thinking she will also continue with her poetry, mini stories and song writing.  This girl has too many words inside her head for them not to tumble out all. day. long.
  3. She also has a rather alarming hobby of reading the dictionary and thesaurus, as well as getting out books from the library on grammar and writing.  I know because I am very ‘blessed’ to be the recipient of all her learning from each of the aforementioned books.  My grammar has never been so good 🙂
  • Quiet time reading
  1. She will be working her way through our entire collection of Victorian era authors.  And there are many….
  • Bible Study

Charlotte has just begun to explore youth leading as a possible career and has asked for lots of Bible teaching which will help her to prepare for this.  She adores the word of God and soaks up anything God related.  I have given her full choice over these courses.

  1. A Brave Girl: Jen Hatmaker (5 sessions)capture2
  2. Surrender:Francis Chan (4 sessions)Capture7
  3. Made to make a Difference: Max Lucado (4 sessions)Capture8
  4. Am I Happy? : Sean McDowell (4 sessions)Capture9
  • Extra Curricular Activities
  1. Charlotte will begin helping in Sunday school, which she is very much looking forward to.
  2. She and Lil’ also help at the local school assembly each Tuesday morning which they will continue to do.
  3. Charlotte is now old enough to join the youth service.
  4. She will continue to attend the youth choir.
  5. Charlotte also helps out with the children’s choir (which B5 and A7 attend).
  6. Charlotte’s chosen extra curricular activities are her music which I have already covered above.
  7.  Charlotte, her twin and Thomas, along with a few of their friends, have created a band, and have big plans to play at the cabaret next summer.  Our shed at the bottom of the garden gives them a great place to practice out of the ear shot of the rest of the family 😉

Hopefully that will keep my older ones busy and out of mischief 😉

  1. Great lineup! Your Conquer Math is like CTCMath that we use. The kids love it. It’s improved for us over the years.Love the book list options too!

  2. This all sounds great! I am particularly interested in the Beauty by the Book and Dream Big and other Bible videos you mentioned- do you get them through Schoolhouse Teachers? Our almost 13 year old daughter and I are currently going through the Reclaiming Beauty video course from Western Conservatory, and the ones you mentioned sound like they might be good for future use 🙂

  3. Desiring God by John Piper, I highly recommend that for Miss Charlotte, I loved it when I read it at a few years older than her.
Also, after she’s read all of these classics she needs to read the Thursday Next series, she’ll get big kick out of them.
