How to Bake an Apple Pie and See the World is a perfect introduction to the continents of the world, which is what A, B and I hope to finish by September.  This was a quick study to familiarise the girls with the way the world is laid out, giving some of its history and helping them to learn the names and positions of all of the continents.

We read ‘How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World’ in addition to ‘Maps, the Oceans and Continents’ daily.  I downloaded the very excellent Fold&Learn activities which are free when you subscribe to the FIAR blog:

We learnt this continents song to the tune of Old Macdonald has a Farm and this one to Oh, Christmas Tree!

Learning about the Continents

I brought out a map puzzle to do each day (we own a few so I alternated each day to keep it fresh and fun).  I made sure I did it with the little ones so that we could chat about and reinforce their knowledge of the continents:

We also used these Montessori Nomenclature Continents Three Part Cards for the girls to practice all they had learnt:

The very last activity we did before making the obligatory apple pie for tea was drawing a quick map of the world on the back of an old used table cloth.  I cut an apple in half and placed seven colours of paint (one for each continent) onto paper plates.  I asked the girls to demonstrate their knowledge of the continents by apple stamping each continent in a different colour:

Well, we had to do!  The girls and I chopped up some apples, gently simmered them and popped them into an pie crust:
