A Year in the Life of a Homeschooling Family: Day 12

I suppose in writing about our year there will always be days when things don’t quite go as planned. But that is what I want to show – that sometimes life throws you a curve ball. To be honest, I only have a cold (and therefore a small curve ball), but for once it has gone onto my chest rather than my sinuses. This means I am experiencing the very unusual phenomenon of losing my voice! I can’t remember the last time (if ever) that has happened to me. So I have had to forgo teaching today on account of me not knowing any sign language!

It doesn’t matter too much though, as Friday’s are mainly our catch up day. That said, I am a little behind with the littles ones fun school this week thanks to being unwell and also my day up in London with my mum.

Sooo, Lillie and Charlotte sailed through their work, with Charlotte picking up my slack with the little ones. Again, unusually, both younger girls had multiple tests to do today, which I will need to make sure never happens again. Poor Becca really did not cope very well with sitting six tests all in one day. Never again. Charlotte was fabulous though, and she kept her calm and helped her work through them, giving Becs support whenever she needed it. Thanks baby!

The little ones then spent the afternoon at their friend’s house (thank you so much Helen!). Lillie began experimenting with some editing software as she, Thomas and Charlotte are thinking about starting their own YouTube channel. Charlotte was, meanwhile, getting on with the very important task of writing to our educational minister complaining about the need to pass a GCSE in Màths. In the UK, teens need to pass a GCSE in English and Màths in order to study anything at university. Charlotte is less than impressed! So she is using her rather adequate voice to let the educational minister know!

I decided to spend the day in bed. I still have a temperature and didn’t really feel well enough to be up and about. However, I am the world’s worst patient and hate being in bed!! I have been trying to pass the time beavering away at planning next week’s school. I usually do this in dribs and drabs over the week and then finish up at the weekend. I have currently been sitting here for the last five hours and I have only just got Charlotte’s school planned for next week. I honestly had no idea it took me this long to do! Cripes, I have another three children to do yet..

I think it is the Latin which is causing the problem. Completely like trying trying to figure out double Dutch, it really takes me a long time to understand even the smallest of things!

Charlotte also does lots of Classics reading which I need to set her each week, and that takes time going through all her books and jotting down my expectations.

I am about to start school planning the littles school now. Last week I added in Abigail’s science, which of course I shall be doing again this week as well. I am adding in art for Becca this week, which both she and I are very excited about:

The book is set out into clear ‘Art Labs’ with simple well explained lessons. I haven’t found an art curriculum that suits Becs yet so I am hopeful this is it 🙂

Right now, the littles are back and are cooking dinner with Daddy, who is making some pork and apple burgers from scratch. Gary and Lillie will then be taking Becca to try out a gymnastics group in our village.

Apologies for the boring photos this week, they have all been taken from my bed 🙂

Have a lovely weekend all!
