February Home School {2025}

February Home School 2025

I think journalling our homeschool right now is a sort of rinse and repeat activity. Certainly, it feels like February home school bits and pieces mimics January home school post! We are nine weeks out from Abigail’s first GCSE exam. She is currently focusing on two in Psychology and Sociology. Likewise, Becca is studying for her Level One’s in Textiles, Mixed Media and Photography. These are equivalent to the first year of GCSEs but in creative subjects. She has a time limit on the textiles and needs to finish by April. So the pressure is on…but she’s got this!

Psychology

The first exam covers the five subjects below. Thus far, we have revised development and memory and are about to start on psychological problems. I am writing flash cards for her for each topic. Then we test, test and test some more. After she knows them fairly well, Abs does lots of past questions.

  • Topic 1: Development – How did you develop?
  • Topic 2 : Memory–How does your memory work?
  • Topic 3 : Psychological problems – How would psychological problems affect you?
  • Topic 4 : The brain and neuropsychology – How does your brain affect you?
  • Topic 5 : Social influence – How do others affect you?

Sociology

The first exam covers the three areas below, although it will drawer on the rest of the curriculum. We have covered social theory in its totality and are half way through revising families. We are covering methodology for both psychology and sociology as we go along. I’ve also made flashcards covering every aspect of social theory and families which Abigail is in the process of learning.

  • The sociology of families
  • The sociology of education
  • Relevant areas of social theory and methodology

Exam Paper

Abs sat an old exam paper and obtained 53% which is fantastic given we’ve not revised two thirds of the curriculum yet. What is even more amazing is that 53% based on the grade boundaries for the year of the paper was a grade 7 (which is an A). I can’t get over that an A was 53%. It seems quite low, does it not?

Anyway, I’m sure it will give her confidence going forward.

Maths

Abs completed all ten lessons on algebraic fractions and began mechanics, completing three lessons so far from Geometry I.

Textiles

February Home School

Becca is so close to finishing her Textiles. She chose to make an embroidered pillow for her final piece. She had to film herself doing it whilst narrating on camera exactly what she was doing. Today she sent me over 72 short videos. Yes 72. I know what I’ll be doing this weekend. Seventy-two.

Mixed Media

Becca’s theme for her current mixed media project is ‘enchanted’. She’s still in the planning stage but it thinking about doing either some sort of masquerade mask or a body of a python twisting around her body over the top of a dress! The one thing she is sure of is that she wants to use plaster cast strips. I can’t wait to see what she does!

Photography

This week we are just formatting her booklet that she has finished and getting it sent off…hopefully tomorrow. I am procrastinating this. Formatting stuff is 100% the more boring thing I do in our little homeschool.

Drawing

Becca is not actually taking any art courses at the moment. She is however highly motivated and spends at least an hour in her spare time trying to perfect portraiture. It has been fascinating watching her process. She’s got crazy skills and she works super hard:

Maths

Becca is working on algebraic equations.

That’s it for this month. We’re entering into exam territory and I can definitely feel the pace quickening for Abs and I. This month has a half term week in it and Gary was off for a few days. We historically get far less down when he’s around so I must say, I don’t feel like we have achieved a huge volume of stuff this month. I guess it’s also a shorter month in the year and is historically my least favourite month in terms of energy, enthusiasm and motivation. Role on March (tomorrow!)
