What's in my Walking Bag

This week’s video is all about my walking habit and how, over the years it has become my way to destress and process things. A year and a half ago, I bought myself what used to be known as a bum bag! I needed an alternate way of walking the dog. When we were on roads with no pavement, I needed to keep him very close to my side. This meant some inevitable resistance from him and a sore shoulder for me. My ‘bum bag’ was a special bag for walking the dog! In this post I thought I would share what’s in my walking bag.

Walking the Sorrows Away

Over the years, walking has been the thing that I turn to during tricky times. In this video, I reflect over its importance in my live:

The Actual Bag

I bought this from Amazon for around £18. It’s basically advertised as a hands-free dog lead. It is one of my most favourite possessions and I use it every single day. Also, I’ve had it for about 18 months and it still looks as good as new:

As you can see, the bag comes with a flexible dog lead, a poo bag container and a small water bottle. There’s a pouch which is perfect for a phone. And the bag is nice and spacious and has an interior pocket. So what is in my walking bag?

Dog’s Lead

This is a long double ended dog lead which is nice and thick. It is also sort of elasticated so extends whilst walking. This is helpful to reduce pulling. Also, as an aside, this is by far the most comfortable way to walk a dog. Harv isn’t terrible on a lead but he does like to give everything a sniff. This means he stops to sniff and I keep walking…hence the pulled shoulder.

Water Bottle

I have to admit, this is probably my favourite part of the bag. It’s small, contains enough water for an hour long walk and has its own pouch. The pouch is on the outside of the bag, making it easy to access. It keeps the water upright and can be tightened with the strap.

Inside Pouch

The interior of the bag is large with a pocket across its width. This is where I keep my own strong poo bags, which come folded to this exact size! I also keep a map of the woods I walk in. Even though I’ve been walking them for decades, and I pretty much always take the same route, I like to have a map…just in case.

Inside the Bag

Inside the bag are:

  • Tissues and lip balm
  • Cleansing wipes (handy if I need to wipe Harv’s slobber off his face or clean my hands after picking up poo)
  • Antibacterial gel (cleaning hands after picking up poo)
  • A small solid box for keeping nature finds. Inside the box is a small pair of scissors which I use for cutting a flower or leaf to press. The box protects them until I get them home.

What do you like to take walking with you?
