It took us a week to study knights. Not long, no. The children, however, have been reading so many great books, playing loads of dressing up that there seemed little point wasting time teaching them that which they already knew. So I didn’t! After a little questioning to find any glaring gaps, I thought we would touch on heraldry and gaining a knight hood. We will also be touching on knights again when we study the Holy wars
First their book list:
Last summer, I had bought them a wooden, plain sword and shield each, the shield begging to be decorated. Using this website and this book we looked into heraldry:
They chose their design and away they went to decorate their shields:

And all my knights with their final shields:

Of course the knights had to do a bit of fighting and protecting, as every good knight should:

Next we did a bit of research on how someone was knighted, if they were not born a knight. I had the children dress up as knights to be and C10 was king. The king then dubbed the two would be knights:

Looking good guys. Shields are a good job. Well done.
Thanks Daddy, we enjoyed it lots and lots!! Ps We don’t feel well!
My son has been living in his knight helmet and costume for over 2 years now. He can’t get enough of all things related to knights. The coats of arms are very well done, and the fights looked fierce. I think I’ll stay on the side with B2 and have some cake instead. 🙂
So well said! Cup of tea, to go with the cake?
Oh my, it looks like all of them are having so much fun! I love it! I have been looking through your old posts and you have such great resources and book lists. I will be back!
Thank you, I’m so pleased! You’re welcome back anytime!!
I love the photos! And yeah, every older brother should know not to fight the younger siblings :). My 5 year old takes down the 20 year old all the time by cheating shamelessly.
LOL!! My eldest is so competitive that even a victory against his 2 year old sister would still be considered a victory worth having!! That said, it is all done in good spirits!
Also, the site http://www.stormthecastle.com might be a hit with your kids….tons of projects and how-tos including great helmets, chain mail, and other stuff. The boys in our family made a 3-foot trebuchet that throws tennis balls for the dogs last summer using plans from the site.
That sounds FANTASTIC!! I’m off to check it out- thanks for the info!
Love the shields and the books! Those are happy times!
They really are. So blessed to be at home!
I just scheduled this to two different boards. I love their costumes! I seriously need to work on my kids Ren fest costumes……. One week to go before we’re there again.
Oh, and I want to know did you make them or buy them?
I don’t think we have anything like that in the uk….maybe I’ll have to check it out. I saw your photos and it looks really good! We bought most of them. They are a mish mash of charity shop, new and bits and pieces from the dress up box!
Those shields are beautiful!
Thank you
What a great study! You can just tell that dressing up was one of their favorite things! And the shields are awesome! We’re doing the middle ages now; gives me some ideas!
Thanks Jessy. And you’re right – dress up is NEVER a waste of money in this household!
I like the shields with their beautiful coats of arms.
We’ve been doing a lapbook about knights and castles so this post was timely.
I hadn’t realised until recently about the complexities of heraldry and its nomenclature!
It was a really good project and the company we got the wooden shields from has all sorts of goodies for weaponry and historical stuff
Fabulous! The coat of arms look incredible. I can’t wait to do the middle ages again with my youngest.
Thank you Mary. They did have a lot of fun!
What a very fun lesson!! My kiddos would adore those costumes:)
Thank you Lora, we did have lots of fun!!
Amazing!!! I’m definitely going to borrow these ideas.
Borrow away, I’m flattered!!
My son was a knight for All Saints Day. Love the books and the shields/swords.
Blessings to you!
Emily
Thanks for visiting and taking time to comment, Emily. Blessing back to you!!
Your kiddos have such adorable faces and they seemed to be one serious group shining armor!
Thanks Stephanie! They LOVE, LOVE, LOVE dressing up!
