Usually on a Wednesday I write about something we’ve studied previously. My goal is to have fully caught up and have a record of all our history by the end of this year (probably before). This post was due to be on Mycenae, but I was going through some old photos and found a heap portraying our time at a medieval reenactment and I thought, as we were finishing off castles this week, it would slot in quite nicely!
We love going to re-enactments and I think secretly the children would quite like to get involved in one themselves (lots of dressing up and pretend play – what could be more enjoyable?). I love also that they tend to be very hands on and not only give lots of demonstrations, but also allow the children a chance to try things for themselves. This was a reenactment we attended in Northern Ireland, so was probably about 4 years ago.

Oh the memories!! I LOVE looking back!
That looks just like the Celtic festival we went to, and yes, it was so much fun!!
One thing that sticks out in my mind about that day was how hot the reenactors were, really sweltering- made me thankful we could wear lighter clothes now days!
My g’kids have gone to one held locally here in Canada (that never had any knights, was not even “discovered” then yet!) held by a church as a fundraiser. It is enacted every two years. I make the 3 girls peasants dresses and we all have a blast. (The 14 year old boy is MUCH too cool to dress up!!). Fun for all.
You are such a lovely Granny!! I used to make a lot of the children’s dress up but I just don’t have the time anymore. There is something MUCH more special about homemade dress up and seeing your children wear clothes you yourself made!
My son couldn’t get enough of those until this year, so in the past 3 years he and I had been to every medieval reenactment near us that I could find. I learnt a lot each time too. I’m so glad there are adults who are interested in history enough to become reenactors as they truly bring history to life for us.
We go when we can. We went to the Battle of Hastings reenactment last October, but Gary missed it because B2 was in bad form that day. He missed a really good day, so I think we’ll make it a priority to go next year. It was so worth it!
The things I do for the kids. I seem to remember you throwing balls too!
Moi?? Not lil’ ol’ me? I would never, EVER do anything like that to my revered husband!!
P.S. Love ya!!
Reenactments are great. We were at a Tudor day today. My daughter discovered that it isn’t easy to play in a Tudor dress!
Oh, I love Tudor clothes – so feminine! Where did you go? I don’t know of any re-enactments on near London at the moment. Gary had a few days off work, so we were looking for places to visit. We ended up going to Windsor Castle- which was enormous!
We went with a group of home educators to a schools’ event at Kent Life. It was well designed.
I’ve not been to Windsor Castle-must look into that.
We were actually supposed to be going to a Renaissance Festival today, but one of the boys got sick.
They’re so much fun to go to. I love the picture of your daughter with the sword.
I’m so enjoying looking back at photos of learning done when they were little. They are so darn cute!!
