Looking Back: Middle Ages Reenactments

Usually on a Wednesday I write about something we’ve studied previously. My goal is to have fully caught up and have a record of all our history by the end of this year (probably before). This post was due to be on Mycenae, but I was going through some old photos and found a heap portraying our time at a medieval reenactment and I thought, as we were finishing off castles this week, it would slot in quite nicely!

We love going to re-enactments and I think secretly the children would quite like to get involved in one themselves (lots of dressing up and pretend play – what could be more enjoyable?).  I love also that they tend to be very hands on and not only give lots of demonstrations, but also allow the children a chance to try things for themselves.  This was a reenactment we attended in Northern Ireland, so was probably about 4 years ago.

  1. My g’kids have gone to one held locally here in Canada (that never had any knights, was not even “discovered” then yet!) held by a church as a fundraiser. It is enacted every two years. I make the 3 girls peasants dresses and we all have a blast. (The 14 year old boy is MUCH too cool to dress up!!). Fun for all.

    1. You are such a lovely Granny!! I used to make a lot of the children’s dress up but I just don’t have the time anymore. There is something MUCH more special about homemade dress up and seeing your children wear clothes you yourself made!

  2. My son couldn’t get enough of those until this year, so in the past 3 years he and I had been to every medieval reenactment near us that I could find. I learnt a lot each time too. I’m so glad there are adults who are interested in history enough to become reenactors as they truly bring history to life for us.

    1. We go when we can. We went to the Battle of Hastings reenactment last October, but Gary missed it because B2 was in bad form that day. He missed a really good day, so I think we’ll make it a priority to go next year. It was so worth it!

    1. Oh, I love Tudor clothes – so feminine! Where did you go? I don’t know of any re-enactments on near London at the moment. Gary had a few days off work, so we were looking for places to visit. We ended up going to Windsor Castle- which was enormous!

      1. We went with a group of home educators to a schools’ event at Kent Life. It was well designed.
I’ve not been to Windsor Castle-must look into that.
