Artist Study - Seurat

Impressionist Artist Study: Seurat

Last term Lillie spent a few happy weeks learning all about the Impressionist painters.  She studied one artist for two weeks.  This week’s artist is Seurat who is well known for his pointillism.

Goals for this Study

  • Read about Seurat and his paintings and create a scrap book page with a gallery of Seurat’s paintings and a short biography:suerat-1 suerat-2
  • To learn about pointillism as a method of painting, and how it works:

  • Carry out a study of the chosen piece of work by Seurat and write a blog post reviewing it.  Lillie has written the review and posted it to her own blog which you can find here:capture
  • Produce your own copy or variation of the chosen painting/sculpture:seurat-1 seurat-2 seurat-3 And her final piece:dsc_0391
  • Lillie had the privilege of seeing the original ‘Bathers at Asnières’ painting when we went to The National Gallery together (apologies for quality – I haven’t quite figured out my phone yet 🙂  ):20160615_1141361

I think I have one more artist to write about, which is Renoir.

What impressed my kids the most when we first went to an art gallery was how large the paintings really were. Of course they were little then, so they seemed even larger to them.
    Nice work for Lillie!

    • They are enormous, aren’t they? I keep promising myself to buy a huge canvas to create something on….one day

  2. Lillie did a fantastic job! We studied Seurat last autumn and it proved a lot of fun, but quite challenging to get the shadowing just right. She is really growing as an artist.

    • Hello Donna! How lovely to hear from you! How are all your teens doing? I often think about you and wonder how everything is over the pond. (((hugs)))

      • Hi, Claire! We are all doing fine. I am going to email you soon. I have lots of news to share that is too much for this space.:)) Hugs to you, too, my friend.:))

  3. I’ve always been amazed by pointillism, it’s fascinating to me.
