Homemade Oven Gloves…the Higgledy-Piggledy Method

Sooo…last week I got the bright idea to make some homemade oven gloves from some vintage Laura Ashley fabric I bought at the beginning of mine and Gary’s marriage. You know you’re getting old when vintage means sometime in your life time!

Anyway, I had some fabric which I had sewn and used before. It was still really beautiful, especially given it was stained, puckered in places and even had a few holes. But it had been stuck in my top drawer for donkey’s years. It was time to give it a new lease of life!

Homemade Oven Gloves, Pot Holders, Tea Towels…

Although this post is only about the homemade oven gloves, I also have plans to make some pot holders, trim some tea towels and perhaps even make some serviettes. It kind of depends how long the limited amount of fabric lasts.

First up, though, are the oven gloves. Now I didn’t know how to make oven gloves going into this and I did not have any pattern or instructions. I guess I could have googled it and found some, but I wanted to play. Instructions aren’t conducive to playing, so there was no googling.

I drive my family insane by my very strong aversion to instructions. Thing is, if I read instructions I don’t seem to remember them to apply them the next time I want to do whatever they are instructing. But by playing and trial-and-error-ing, I learn loads. And not just what I set out to learn. Best of all, playing also means I tend to remember all the lessons I’ve learnt for the next time I want to do whatever it was I wanted to figure out.

Two Days Later

Perhaps if I had actually googled instruction, making the oven gloves wouldn’t have taken me two full days to make! Regardless, I had a huge amount of fun trying to figure it out, trouble shoot and problem solve. The end result, whilst not perfect, was absolutely good enough for me and I was ridiculously proud of myself!
