This medieval knights homeschool lesson was our learning over the period of a week. We are deep into our medieval unit study and are flip flopping as topics interest us. The children have been reading so many great books set in the Middle Ages and which include knights (obviously!) and they have been playing loads of dressing up as knights, fighting as knights, saving the world as knights… they kind of know most of everything knights related! After a little questioning to find any glaring gaps, we decided we would touch on heraldry and gaining a knight hood.

Make an Adventure Box! I didn’t make an adventure box for this medieval knights homeschool lesson but they are such a fabulous idea for getting the children hyped up about the forthcoming week of homeschool. And knights is such a fun topic to build an adventure box around. Dressing up, as you can see from the photo above, is a marvellous addition to an adventure box. Heraldry: Designing their Own Coat of Arms
We flicked through the book together and chatted about each of the children’s ideas for their coat of arms. They each finalised their design and away they went to decorate their shields:

And all my knights with their final shields:

Medieval Knights Homeschool Lesson Pretend Play
Of course the knights had to do a bit of fighting and protecting, as every good knight should:

Pretend Play: Obtaining a Knighthood
Next, we did a bit of research on how someone was knighted, if they were not born a knight. I had the children dress up as knights to be and Charlotte was king. The king then dubbed the two would be knights:

This was definitely the children’s idea of fun school!
