Mr Tickle Book Unit {Mr Men School}

Mr Tickle Book Unit {Mr Men School}

This week in our Mr Men School, we dived into a delightful Mr Tickle Book Unit, and what a joyful, activity-filled adventure it turned out to be! From creative crafts to playful maths, science experiments to storytelling, this theme captured my children’s imaginations completely.

I’ll be honest, I’m exhausted… but in the best possible way. The children are still asking for ‘more Mr Men-ny activities,’ which tells me everything I need to know: this Mr Tickle Book Unit was a huge success.

If you’re a homeschooling parent looking for a fun, engaging, and multi-subject unit study, let me walk you through our week and inspire your own Mr Men School at home.

Literature: Bringing Mr Tickle to Life

We began our week with daily readings of Mr Tickle, allowing the children to become familiar with the story, characters, and humor.

Reading together builds:

  • Listening comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • Story sequencing skills

Repetition was key here—each re-read deepened their understanding and enjoyment.

Magazine Work: Learning Through Surprise Resources

Sometimes homeschool magic happens unexpectedly!

Mr Tickle Book Unit {Mr Men School}

We stumbled upon a brand-new Mr Men magazine—featuring Mr Tickle himself. It included:

  • Character worksheets
  • Stickers
  • Posters of Mr Men characters
She just loved this!

We used the materials for:

  • Fine motor practice (stickers)
  • Character recognition
  • Future planning (a Mr Men chore chart!)

And here is the finished pages. Cool uh?

This is a great reminder: keep an eye out for real-world resources that align with your homeschool themes.

Maths: Playful Number Learning

Our maths activities centered around a homemade Mr Tickle number toolbox, and it was a hit!

Activities included:

  • Counting dots on dice
  • Number recognition and writing
  • Ordering numbers
  • Creating number puzzles

By turning maths into a game, the children were:

  • Engaged longer
  • More confident
  • Actively learning through play

Science: The Science of Orange 🍊

In keeping with Mr Tickle’s bright orange color, we explored color mixing.

Experiment 1: Walking Water

Mr Tickle Book Unit {Mr Men School}
I placed water down red food dye in one test tube, and yellow in the other. The girls folded up some kitchen roll and placed the ends into the dye with the other ends suspended in some clear water in a beaker in the middle. We waited and sure enough the dye moved up through the kitchen roll and into the water and mixed to form an orange solution

We used:

  • Red and yellow food coloring
  • Kitchen roll
  • Water

The children watched as the colors traveled and mixed into orange—a simple but fascinating introduction to absorption and color theory.

Experiment 2: Paint Mixing

I put yellow and red paint into conical jars and they used a turkey baster to place a bit of each into their pots and stirred with a spoon. I tell you, anything is made more fun with a turkey baster!

Using red and yellow paint, the children mixed their own orange shades using droppers and spoons.

We used the resulting orange paint for our art lesson

Tip: Novel tools (like turkey basters!) make everything more exciting.

Art: Creating Mr Tickle

Creativity took center stage this week!

Junk Modelling

Junk for our junk model of Mr Tickle

We built a giant Mr Tickle using:

The girls filled a flour bag full of polyester filling from an old duvet and I taped it down. they then painted the filled bag and four toilet rolls which would be his arms. We also found a blue pot, which when taped upside down to the sack would work well as a het. Here the girls are painting everything
  • Recycled materials
  • Paint
  • Imagination

This was so much fun to do. I want to be a child again!

Wiki Sticks Creations

A5 with her creations

The children recreated Mr Men characters using bendable sticks—great for:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Visual creativity
Look at that cute Mr Man. Not sure which one it is though…

Play Dough Fun

Play dough time turned into character creation!

A5 particularly enjoyed this and brought out her toy Mr Tickle to copy!

The children sculpted their own versions of Mr Tickle, using toys as inspiration. This helped develop:

  • Hand strength
  • Spatial awareness
  • Creative expression

  • What would your own Mr Men character be like?

For you (the parent):

  • Which activities sparked the most engagement?
  • What would you simplify or expand next time?

Mr Tickle Book Unit: Final Thoughts

This week reminded me why I love homeschooling. Learning doesn’t have to be rigid—it can be joyful, messy, creative, and full of laughter.

Our Mr Tickle Book Unit brought all of that and more into our home. And while I may need a nap… I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.

Next up in our Mr Men School? A brand new character and a whole new adventure.
