Seasons of Joy: Psalm 51

One goal for this year is to get our home in order for the end of next year when we will be possibly starting our journey into adoption. I have been trying to redecorate the bathroom for the last few months. The major problem with this lies in the fact that we only have one bathroom and there are seven, occasionally eight, who need a bath every day. We do not have a shower and everyone likes a loooong soak. This means the bathroom is very wet almost all of the time, and we fight mould at every turn, as the before photos below will show:

Getting Rid of the Mould

Mould is a massive problem because of the constant bathing habit of all the inhabitants of the cottage, the age of the cottage (it’s almost 250 years old) and the fact that it is a corner room and two walls are outdoor facing. The mould had got so bad that the painting on the walls and ceiling was peeling off.

I researched the best ways of getting rid of mould and staying rid of mould. Gary and I spent over £300 on mould treatment, mould resistant undercoat and mould resistant paint. The problem was finding a time to treat and paint when the walls were dry. The bathroom walls are never dry! I sometimes have to go next door to use my poor mum’s loo because I can’t seem to get into my own! I think having only one bathroom is the thing which frustrates Gary the most about our cottage. Having five teens/young people using it each day, and with all of them loving a looonnnggg soak, our bathroom is almost always occupied…so no dry walls!

Painting the Bathroom

So, I had to snatch moments of time here, there and everywhere. All this to say, it’s taking me forever.

I’ve still got the other side of the bathroom to do. The other side houses all the laundry stuff and a lovely cosy corner with a rocking chair. I have begun this area already, and have begun making some bits and pieces. You all know how much I love having scripture in every room. On a whim, I googled ‘bathroom Bible verses’…well, that was an experience! There were some corkers, but I narrowed it down to one, Psalm 51:

This scripture is going to pop up throughout our bathroom in many forms, the first being on a cushion. I made this from scraps of material, embroidering (pretty poorly, 🙊 ) one night whilst I watched Grey’s Anatomy:

The observant among you will notice the cushion was made from the same material as the tampons and pads boxes, I made above 👆

This time next month, hopefully there will be a second post of the other half of our bathroom 🙏 😁
