In this post/video I take you along with me for my solo date in London. I opted to spend most of the day in the Victoria and Albert Museum. This year, one of my goals is to spent a bit more time out of the house by myself. I am such an introvert and love being alone, but sometimes I can hole myself up in our cosy cottage and not venture out. Don’t get me wrong. I am totally content being holed up. It’s just this year I wanted to push myself to get out and about. Maybe to see things, or learn things or even write things. So, this is my first solo date to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

You could definitely tell that I’m now not terribly practiced in the art of going places. I mean, I mapped out my route from Victoria to the Victoria and Albert Museum, printing it out…before promptly forgetting to take it with me. I then had to buy a map of London. Well, it must have taken me a good twenty minutes just to find where I was on the map. And it wasn’t a small map (unlike the one I’d printed). For the forty or so minutes it took me to get from Victoria station to the museum, I spent much time peering confuddled into a crumpled map. I’ll try not to mention that for much of the time it was upside-down.
The Victoria and Albert Museum
When I finally got to my destination, I was, as always, bowled over by its beauty. London is an enigma to me. It has a quiet beauty amongst a cacophony of chaos. The sheer volume of cars, buses, taxis, bikes and people, all trying their best to get to their destination as quickly as possible whilst at the same time trying not to injure others in the process. It could be an introvert’s nightmare. I mean, noise…people…smells…and did I mention the excessive numbers of people?
Yet, there is a quietude amongst the clamor and commotion; an invisibility to be found when one is a single person. Somehow all the noise blends together and elevates leaving just me and my thoughts. That probably sounds a bit new-age-y. I don’t mean it too. I guess what I’m saying is that one can find much needed solitude even when surrounded by a vast number of people.
