This is for Ticia, who asked for the recipe of our Ojibwe fried bread. We basically used the recipe from this book:
Recipe
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tbs oil
3/4 cup water
Cooking oil
Add ingredients together and knead until soft and pliable. Form into small balls and make a hole in the middle to ensure even cooking throughout:
Use about an inch of oil in the frying pan and fry a few at a time. Toss in sugar and serve with a fruit dip:
They were yummy-scrummy!
Really, is there much better than fried dough dipped in sugar? (other than maple syrup, not much!)
Is there anything less healthier? Probably not, but my was it good!
I have never seen fry bread with a hole in the middle. Interesting. It looks like a doughnut! Perhaps it is because I have only seen Navajo fry bread. Pretty good, huh? I love to get fry bread at Indian Pow Wows.
How cool is that – to actually go to a PowWow! I’m jealous!
They look tasty! But I could also imagine to comibine them with salty dishes…
Yes. Maybe garlic butter. Mmmmm!
I’ve never tried fry bread with sweets! I think we’ve been missing out. I sometimes make fry bread to go with pinto beans. Now I want to make some…
They tasted like very good, very fresh doughnuts!
Yum, now I’ll make that “for my kids,” and gain 10 pounds.
Yes, they are not very, very healthy and absolutely won’t be good for our pursuit of healthfulness! But darn they taste good!!
Okay. This is on our list to make. I will let you know how it goes. (And I am sure there will be no calories in our version.:))HA!)
