Healthy Homeschool Living: Recipe File – Kefir Smoothies

Healthy Homeschool Living

I allow my kefir to sit for 24 hours with the grains and then strain and pop liquid in fridge for another twelve. The resulting liquid, though not delicious by any stretch of the imagination, is at least drinkable.  Especially if you hide the taste somewhat in a Kefir Smoothies.

Kefir Smoothies

I make two different types of Kefir Smoothie recipes.  The first is brain boosting, and I made that one lots over the last couple of months of exam taking.  The second is a treat smoothie, which almost tastes like a decadent chocolate milkshake.

Blueberry, Avocado and Walnut Kefir Smoothies

This is one of my usual ‘chuck it all in and tweak as necessary recipes’.  For our five children I use:

Half a pack of frozen blueberries (Blueberries are promote healthy bones and skin health.  They lower blood pressure, manage diabetes, protect against heart disease and prevent cancer.  Those little blue berries are also famous for improving mental health, promoting a healthy digestion and, importantly for exams, they help improve short term memory)

Three chopped bananas, frozen  (I buy over-ripe bananas cheaply, chop and freeze three to a bag) (Bananas are rich in potassium and fibre and may prevent asthma, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and digestive problems)  I use them here for their thickening qualities and to add some sweetness

One chopped avocado (Again, I buy over ripe ones cheaply and chop and freeze one to a bag) (Avocados are nutrient rich; contain plant sterols useful for bringing down cholesterol; they improve eyesight and protect against osteoporosis and protect against cancers, depression and improve digestion.  Avocados are natural detoxifiers and are antimicrobial to boot)

Scant handful of walnuts

Jar of kefir (I guess approximately 500ml)  Kefir Health Benefits

Milk to thin if desired

Raw honey to taste (I buy raw honey from Ebay ) (Raw honey is high in anti-oxidants; has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties; healing properties; it is filled with phytonutrients; it helps digestive issues such as peptic ulcers and soothes sore throats)

Pop it all in the blender and blend well.  You need to blend it really, really well if you don’t want any walnut bits.  This makes a thick, cool healthy smoothie

This is also brilliant to pop into a large container and place in the freezer for a few hours to freeze.  It makes a lovely healthy alternative to ice-cream

Chocolate Banana Kefir Smoothies

Three frozen bananas

Jar of kefir

Milk to thin

1 TBS Raw Cacao powder (I buy from The Grape Tree) (Cacao contains 40% more anti-oxidants as blueberries.  It is the highest plant-based source of iron.  Cacao is full of magnesium for a healthy heart.  It has more calcium than cows milk and finally, it is a natural mood elevator and anti-depressant)

Raw honey to Taste

Place in blender until light and fluffy 🙂

This can also be frozen to make a delicious, healthy chocolate ice-cream substitute.
